Higher Education in South Texas

The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) is a unique addition to the University of Texas System. A historic partnership was implemented in 1991 between UTB, now a four-year university, and Texas Southmost College (TSC), a community college with a presence in Brownsville since 1926. The two institutions have shared campus facilities and faculty since 1973 when UTB opened its doors as an upper-level extension center of Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas.

The partnership gives students in the lower Rio Grande Valley an opportunity to pursue programs and degrees offered at a four-year institution, but it does not eliminate the vocational/technical, developmental education and continuing education courses that a community college traditionally offers. With an enrollment of over 8,000 students, the institution provides the community with certificates in vocational/technical programs and associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Health Sciences. Additionally, following input from a wide spectrum of industry leaders, construction was recently completed on a $23.8 million Science and Engineering Technology Building, the first UTB building constructed on the TSC campus. The complex provides state-of-the-art facilities for training students who want to pursue electronic, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering technology careers. UTB also offers doctoral programs through partnerships with other institutions.
